🗂️ Image Format Converter
Convert JPG, PNG and WebP images to another supported format without installing software. Your selected image is decoded and converted in your browser, with preview and quality controls before download.
Select an Image
Choose or drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image. Maximum file size: 10 MB. Maximum decoded size: 40 megapixels.
What Is an Image Format Converter?
An image format converter changes how an image is encoded while keeping its pixel dimensions. For example, you can convert a PNG graphic to JPG for broad compatibility, a JPG photo to WebP for a modern web workflow, or a WebP image to PNG when you need a PNG file for another application.
This tool focuses on common browser-supported raster formats: JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP. If you need to change width or height instead of file type, use the Image Resizer. If your main goal is reducing file size, try the Image Compressor.
How to Convert an Image
- Select or drag in a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 10 MB.
- Choose JPG, PNG or WebP as the output format.
- For JPG or WebP, adjust the quality slider if needed.
- Click Convert Image and review the converted preview and file details.
- Click Download Converted Image to save the new file.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP
JPG / JPEG
JPG is widely supported and is usually a practical choice for photographs. It uses lossy compression and does not support transparency. When a transparent PNG or WebP is converted to JPG here, transparent areas are placed on a white background.
PNG
PNG uses lossless encoding and supports transparency. It is useful for screenshots, logos and graphics that need sharp edges or transparent areas. The quality slider does not apply to PNG output.
WebP
WebP supports efficient lossy or lossless-style browser encoding and can preserve transparency. Output support depends on the browser; the converter checks whether your browser can create WebP before enabling that option.
Examples and Common Uses
PNG to JPG: useful when a service accepts JPEG but not PNG. Remember that transparency cannot be preserved in JPG.
JPG to PNG: changes the file format but does not restore detail already lost through JPEG compression. The PNG may also be larger than the original JPG.
JPG or PNG to WebP: useful when preparing supported images for modern web use. Compare the preview and output size rather than assuming one format will always be smaller.
WebP to PNG or JPG: useful when another app or workflow requires a more traditional file type.
Limits and Important Notes
- The tool accepts JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP images that your browser can decode.
- Files larger than 10 MB are rejected before conversion, and images above 40 megapixels are blocked to reduce browser memory problems.
- Conversion keeps the decoded pixel dimensions; it does not resize the image.
- Animated WebP content is not preserved as animation by this canvas-based converter; the output is a static image.
- Canvas re-encoding generally does not preserve original EXIF/GPS metadata or every embedded color-profile detail.
- Converting a lossy JPG to PNG does not recover detail that was already discarded by JPEG compression.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image conversion itself runs in your browser with standard browser image and canvas features. ToolStrive does not need to upload the selected image to perform this conversion.
Why did my transparent image get a white background?
JPG does not support transparency. When the selected output is JPG, this converter fills transparent pixels with white before creating the JPEG.
Will converting an image make it smaller?
Not always. File size depends on image content, dimensions, output format and quality. A WebP or compressed JPG may be smaller in many cases, while PNG can be larger for photographs.
Does converting change the image dimensions?
No. This tool keeps the decoded width and height. Use the Image Resizer if you also need different pixel dimensions.
